DeKalb County Public Safety Officials, Business Community Partner to Combat Crime

‘Crime & Coffee’ Workshop Empowers Business Owners and Operators To Combat Holiday Crime, December 2nd

[Decatur, GA] Various DeKalb County public safety officials, county officials and local business leaders have partnered to create a “Crime & Coffee” workshop on December 2, at 8:30 a.m. at the Northlake Doubletree Hotel located at 4156 Lavista Road. The free hour-long workshop includes presentations from various public safety officials, a Q&A session and a complimentary continental breakfast. This effort, led by DeKalb County Commissioner Lee May, Commissioner Sharon Barnes Sutton, District Attorney Robert James, acting Solicitor-General Nicole Marchand, DeKalb County Police Chief William O’Brien, DeKalb County Chamber of Commerce President Leonardo McClarty and The DeKalb County Police Alliance will educate and empower local business owners to combat crime especially during these holiday months.

“We consider the best way to combat crime in the community is to come together and create a plan to stop criminal behavior and communicate with one another,” said Marchand. Newly-elected District Attorney Robert James said businesses can be criminal targets during the holidays. “Our small businesses and big businesses are targeted for scams, shoplifting and burglary especially during these holiday months. Our solution is to remain proactive against crime and to actively engage our business community on a regular basis,” added James

May, who heads the Economic Development Committee, agrees that business owners and operators are an essential facet of combating local crimes. “Our business owners in DeKalb have a vested interest in seeing our community thrive in every way,” said May. “We want to encourage the business owners and operators to come out and connect with our public safety officials and have their questions about crime answered in an open forum.”

The goals for the “Crime & Coffee” workshop are to: present crime prevention measures to DeKalb County business owners; connect local business owners with key public safety officials; provide information to business owners concerning combating local

crime, reporting crime and community policing initiatives; and provide business owners with an understanding of the roles, responsibilities and processes of local public safety officials.

“We are excited to partner with our public safety officials to provided valuable information and tools to our business owners,” said McClarty. “The Chamber is committed to providing resources to the entire business community through innovative partnerships and programs.”
